should i use AI to write?

Pros of using AI to write:

• It's faster
• It results in better output sometimes (if there are time constraints)
• It's the future. One day, everyone will use AI to express themselves and it'll fade into the background like autocorrect

Cons of using AI to write:

• You don't develop clear thought (you think less about logical argument)
• You don't develop precise wording (you think less about word choice)
• You don't develop storytelling skills (you think less about the story)
• You don't learn the content as well (you do less active recall)
• The output isn't there yet. In my experience, AI agents still aren't great at logical arguments, word choice and rhythm in expressing my ideas (for personal blogging, not business writing).

Overall, I want to keep an open mind here. I don't want to get overly attached to any viewpoint and not see the issue clearly.

Some thoughts:

• The best managers have been solid individual contributors before, yet it's not the same skill. Similarly, perhaps the best writers in the future will use AI (and use it well), but will have spent significant time writing unassisted.
• I notice the "less thinking" I have to do when using AI to write. Earlier, I was writing an important personal text and had ChatGPT generate a big part of it and I missed some emotional reflection that could have been useful.
• ChatGPT makes you less precise with your words. I wasn't sure what I thought about this but now I think it's bad. I think this because much of thinking clearly is about figuring out the nuance. So even just revising sentences with ChatGPT seems problematic to me (though that's definitely something I've been doing).
• One possible take is to only reach for ChatGPT after a first, effortful draft.
• Another possible take: use ChatGPT as much as you want, but have an incredibly high bar for the output. This will involve really vetting the output, revising it yourself, revising it with ChatGPT by prompting it in interesting ways, etc.

I'll keep thinking about this topic.
