The point of life is to enjoy it
The point of life is to enjoy it.
I decided this in Tahoe in January, cozy and warm after a day in wet snow, vibing to indie pop with three close friends. I want to focus on the present, not on the future. I want to fill my days with fun, fulfilling activities and interesting, warm-hearted people. I want to feel good.
I lose some of you here. I lose some of you for whom the point is still to leave a mark. On the days I feel more of a fire in my belly, I lose myself here too.
For those still with me, let me say something even more radical.
If I could live in a human-sized tube, that would pump me full of good feelings that were more diverse and more enjoyable than any feeling I could experience outside the tube, I would do it.
Yes, I’m a hedonist now.
When you’re ready, join me 😂
This is an answer to a thought experiment from The Pragmatist’s Guide to Life: A Guide to Creating Your Own Answers to Life’s Biggest Questions.
If you could live in a human-sized tube that would make you live twice as long as you would outside the tube and pump you full of good feelings that were more diverse and more enjoyable than any feeling you could experience outside the tube, would you choose to drop everything about your life this instant and commit to the tube for the rest of your life, despite the fact that you would lose all contact with friends and family and never leave the tube again?
After six months of thought, my answer in a word: Yes.
